nail problems

Who gets nail problems?

Toenails of people of all ages can undergo a range of changes, some of which are relatively common. They can become thick, brittle, curved, discoloured, infected, bumpy and grooved. In some cases, the nail falls off and a new one grows. As we grow older, we are more likely to develop toenail problems.

Common conditions and treatment

  • Ingrown Toenails
  • Thickened Nails
  • Fungal Infections
  • Trauma

arthritis

Effects of arthritis

Arthritis in the feet can have far-reaching effects on other parts of the body aside from the affected joints, as your ligaments, tendons and muscles are forced to work harder to maintain stability. This can cause overuse injuries in those ligaments, tendons and muscles, including ankle sprains, torn ligaments and a greater likelihood to fall. Another main concern for people over 75 suffering from arthritis is chronic pain, which has huge effects on your overall health as severe pain not only limits movement, but also disturbs sleep and can lead to problems with overall well-being and depression.
diabetes assessment

DIABETIC ASSEMENTS

We offer comphrensive neurological and vascular examination. A Doppler is used to listen to the pulses in the feet and the wave forms are examined to determine any loss of blood flow that can put a person with diabetes at risk of foot complications such as poor healing.

Nuerological assement includes fine sensory, sharp/dull and other tests to determine if any lower leg or foot nerve changes/damage has occurred.

Dermatological (Skin) Examination is performed and documented.
A full report is forwaded to your GP.
ORTHOTIC PRESCRIPTION

ORTHOTIC PRESCRIPTION

after a full bio-mechanical assement is performed part of your treatment may consist of orthotic therapy ( Shoe Inserts ). We determine the type needed from this assement offering off the shelf insoles to full prescription functional devices ( Custom Insoles ).

Sports

Sports injuries

Overuse syndromes are common occurrences in sport and refer to injuries sustained from repeated action (such as long-distance jogging), as opposed to acute injuries, which occur in an instant (such as a sprained ankle). Your individual biomechanics will have an affect on the likelihood of certain injuries. Prevalent sports injuries include shin splints, Runner's knee, Achilles tendonitis and stress fractures. Sports people may also complain of thickened nails that can sometimes become ingrown or get bruises under the nail from repetitive trauma.

Corns & Calluses

Calluses

Our feet play an important role in getting us around. When we walk or stand, our feet carry the burden of our body weight, as well as the various pressures from movements and the constraints of footwear .
Sometimes, pressure placed on the foot becomes out of balance or extra friction falls on particular areas of the foot. When this happens, the body may respond to the pressure by producing thickenings in the surface layer of the skin.

Corns

If pressure becomes concentrated in a small area, a 'hard' corn may develop. Sometimes the pressure of the corn or callus may produce underlying inflammation, which can result in acute pain, swelling and redness.Sometimes 'soft' corns may form between the toes where the skin is moist from sweat or inadequate drying. These appear white and rubbery and are also caused by excessive friction or pressure.

children's feet

Children's feet

Children's feet differ from those of adults, as they are not yet fully formed.

Development

At six months of age the foot is still mostly cartilage, in fact the last bone doesn't begin to form until children are about three years old. By 18 years, most of the bones are fully formed.

Children's feet are soft and pliable making them prone to damage from abnormal pressure, such as shoes which are too small.

Feet

Our feet are often the most neglected and forgotten part of our bodies. Research has shown that people are more likely to have serviced their car than to have had feet checked by a podiatrist. Yet our feet are our main mode of transport, carrying us on a journey of 128, 00 kilometers in a lifetime - which is equivalent to three times round the world.

Who are podiatrists?

Podiatrists are university-educated foot health professionals. They diagnose and treat specific foot and lower limb conditions including foot problems associated with diabetes and arthritis.

NAIL SURGERY

Nail surgery for painful ingrown nails can be performed by podiatrists in their rooms , under a local anaesthetic, and the patient is able to walk afterwards.
Only the offending part of the nail is removed and a chemical is used to assist in preventing nail regrowth.
The patient will need to return on a weekly basis for re-dressings for about a month.
